How can Yoga Help Me?

Yoga is a mind-body practice that involves specific movements and physical poses, controlled breathing, meditation or relaxation and sometimes guided imagery.

Many people are already familiar with yoga but don’t understand the benefits. Consistent practice offers all kinds of physical benefits; increased balance, muscle tone, flexibility and strength. It is also an activity that welcomes people of all abilities and activity levels. There are always modifications available if one pose or another is challenging for you. Aside from the physical, the combination of elements that yoga uses helps to lower cortisol levels (i.e. the “stress hormone”) and elevates mood. Concentrating intensely on breath and what the body is doing calms the mind.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, recent studies in people with chronic low-back pain indicate that a carefully adapted set of yoga poses may help reduce pain and improve function (the ability to walk and move). Studies also suggest that practicing yoga (as well as other forms of regular exercise) might have other health benefits such as reducing heart rate and blood pressure, and may also help relieve anxiety and depression.

When practiced correctly, yoga is generally safe for everyone.

There are many different types of yoga, so trying out a variety can help you find your favorite. Adopting yoga into your lifestyle can generally give you a better quality of life all the while improving your flexibility!

Why Try Private Yoga?

Joining a yoga class can be intimidating, especially if you are new to yoga.  You may not have thought about doing a private yoga class (just you and your instructor), or you may have thought about it and decided that it’s not worth the money. Let’s take a minute to discuss how amazing one-on-one yoga can be.

Private space to discuss your health history:
In a group class, it can be difficult to catch your instructor alone to discuss any injuries, surgeries or illnesses you may have. Even if you can tell the instructor before class, he or she may not be able to take class time to help you with specific modifications. In a private session, you can discuss this and he or she can help you modify poses or offer alternatives until you can do them on your own.  Yoga can be good for anybody -and any body-, but it can be a much more rewarding practice when your instructor understands your specific needs.

Get exactly what you want and nothing you don’t:
Just like a fitness coach, when you pay for private instruction you get the undivided attention of a trained professional who will get to know your body and your needs and create a routine specifically for you. That might mean working specifically on deep stretching poses, or the right poses for your knees, or a focus on breath work to help with anxiety.  Those needs may even change session to session, and your instructor will communicate with you on what you need that day.

Feel confident in group classes:
Not only can it feel overwhelming to go to a big yoga class, it can be risky if you are a novice. A big class will likely have students of all experience levels, and it can be hard to always keep an eye on the instructor for guidance on poses. Following others in the class could lead you to doing a pose incorrectly or injure yourself.  Having a few private lessons will help you learn the proper way to get in and out of every pose safely. It will also be a more enjoyable class if you are less focused on form, and more focused on being present and enjoying your yoga practice.

Yoga Classes Available:

Urban Zen blends gentle movements, restorative yoga poses, body and breath awareness practices, essential oils, and Reiki. You’ll leave each class feeling calm, relaxed, and revitalized. In a world of over-stimulation and over-work, these practices can offer you a meditative sanctuary.  This class is appropriate for everyone.

Focus is on the breath, body positioning and alignment in common yoga poses.  Students will learn how to build a strong foundation to create safety and freedom in their practice.  Experience balance and harmony through a slow and mindful practice designed to release tension, reduce stress, and promote healing.  All levels are welcome as modifications will be given from beginner to advanced yogi.

Slow Flow Yoga is slow and mindful movement through a series of poses. Participants learn how to move, breathe, and stretch between poses. It allows a person to become familiar with their body, and gives time to evaluate how and when a pose should to be modified, due to physical or experience limitations. This class is appropriate for all experience types.

A grounding and flowing practice, linking breath with movement to greet the day feeling centered, confident, and calm.

Power yoga is a rigorous workout involving the entire body. Perfect if you want to get sweating!

An energetic flow crafted to clear the energy channels of the body with a focus on breath, drishti (gaze), and bandhas (binds). Turn inward to build strength and gain flexibility on and off the mat.
